Why Journalists Deserve Low Pay

May 20, 2009

Well, three cheers for an eye-catching article title.

I zeroed right into it.

To be honest, I understand where the author, Robert G. Picard, is coming from in his article. I would never go as far to say that, collectively, journalists deserve low pay, though I agree whole heartedly that a job not-so-well-done shouldn’t be treated like a million bucks (pun intended). True, some journalists may not have a unique base of knowledge, as the author puts it, but it’s what make us unique all the more (not to negate those with experience elsewhere–personally, I have half a biology degree, lol). Simply put, we are the Captain Not-So-Obvious in the U.S. and abroad, and there is definitely a distinct method to the madness. If that were not so, the issue of random people themselves journalists because they run a blog wouldn’t be such an issue right now. Ouch.

In short, journalism has come to a major crossroads (make that “multi-roads”). Opinion piece or not, this article is a serious wake up call, especially since the media as a whole is/has been very responsible for what gets spread amongst the masses from day to day.

The article only encourages me to stay focused, yet different.
