Charge much?!

Not so.

I was perusing MedisBistro today and read this article. The content of the article itself isn’t especially earth-shattering with regards to industry news–the debate about whether or not to charge for online content has been raging for quite some time now–but I’m a bit surprised that few have commented on the evolution of communication and its role in this current dilemma.

The same economic gameplans cannot be applied to online media the way it has for print. And that’s okay. They are, after all, two simultaneously distinct yet similar platforms.

This makes me wonder how new media and marketing departments at newspapers are coming together to discuss what they plan to actually do about this–I know it’s happening, I’m just not seeing/hearing/reading too much about it. On the “bright” side, consumers usually do come around once poked and prodded enough–for example, you have to pay for CNN, whereas broadcast media was essentially “free” before the advent of cable.

Maybe internet use is just too fresh for so much pressure. I’m but a baby by many folks standards, but I remember a time when computers were nothing more than a big block of metal and plastic we played Oregon Trail (remember those giant, square floppy disks!!!) on at school. Plus, the school only had one anyway! It’s only in the last ten years that the internet has been used so widespread and regularly.

Long post short, journalism is still very much intact. We just need to breathe deeply and roll with the technological punches (no, that isn’t easy for me to say 😦 ).
