Strengthening/learning new skillz. Part II.

July 2, 2009

You’re worth more if you can do more, which is why I’m happy I learned a lot of things on accident, lol.

For example, “web stuff” – I learned web design and content management after spending countless hours on the web in junior high/high school right-clicking and trying to figure out what all that gibberish under “view source” meant. Now that I know, even if my post-graduation hunt for something journalism centric is sub-par, I can (reluctantly) become a freelance web and/or graphic designer.

If there’s one thing all of these layoffs and the surge of social networking platforms have taught us, it’s that new media is in full swing. I personally know AWESOME writers who are afraid to spread themselves into other realms of relaying their ideas. It’s unfortunate that they may be left out in the cold (I even “made” a print-only friend of mine to take a video shooting and editing class, lol).

Quincy Jones, founder of Vibe magazine, said it himself in this article:

“I’m trying to buy my magazine back now,” Jones told the site. “They just messed my magazine all up, but I’m gonna get it back. You better believe it, I’m’a take it online because print and all that stuff is over.”

Journalism is definitely changing…vigilance is key. Definitely staying on my Ps and Qs.
